“Once AI can carry out 30% of tasks, annual growth will exceed 20%” – The Economist, 24 July 2025
A recent Economist issue explored two futures shaped by AGI: a hellscape and an explosion of economic growth. While I chose to open with the more positive scenario, it seems likely that only those invested in AGI businesses and “superstars whose skills [are] not automatable” will benefit. The world ahead may still feel bleak for many of us watching from the sidelines.
In my last post, I sought to engage you about what matters, sharing my fifth anniversary cancer-free.
Today, I wonder: if explosive change is nigh upon us, what do I hold on to?
What gives life continued meaning when the world shifts under our feet?
1. Happiness is not about feeling good all the time.
Despite physical pain and worry in the last month, I’ve felt genuinely happy.
2. Happiness is not about living anxiety-free.
So much of the news these days makes me uneasy but I can still feel happy.
3. Happiness is not about mimicking others’ lives.
I admire role models, but inspiration doesn’t mean imitation. Happiness originates within.
4. Happiness is not tomorrow.
Doomsayers say it’s already too late. I choose to live in the moment.
5. Happiness is not conditional.
It’s not “when X happens.” It’s now – through gratitude.
6. Happiness cannot be chased.
The harder you try, the more it eludes.
Of course, happiness is partly circumstantial. But happiness is also intentional – it’s how we engage with those circumstances.
When the storm hits, what keeps you grounded?
For me, it’s close relationships and meaningful work. Just like The Grim Reaper coming for my 92-year-old mother will not change my love for her, AGI may soon come for my work but I may yet endure thanks to the trust I enjoy with my clients.
Do you think winter is coming? If so, how will you stay happy anyway? 🙏🏼
